MPhil not recognised degree anymore, warns UGC The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared MPhil degree as invalid even as it has warned the universities to discontinue providing admissions in MPhil as per clause 14 of the Commission.
The notification in this regard has been issued by Secretary Manish Joshi stating that complaints were pouring in that a few Universities are inviting fresh applications for M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) program.
OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION FROM UGC
In an official notification, the UGC stated, “It has come to the notice of the UGC that a few universities are inviting fresh applications for MPhil (Master of Philosophy) programme. In this regard, it is to bring to the notice that the MPhil degree is not a recognised degree.”
The notification emphasied Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations 2022, which clearly prohibits higher educational institutions from offering MPhil programmes.
UGC’S DIRECTIVE TO UNIVERSITIES
The UGC had earlier declared the MPhil degree illegitimate, instructing higher educational institutions not to offer MPhil programmes.
