Centre Likely to Create Additional Administrative Units in Ladakh

Centre Likely to Create Additional 5 new districts in Ladakh The Union government is considering the creation of new administrative units in Ladakh to address residents’ demands for the Sixth Schedule and statehood.

While the BJP has been demanding the creation of five new districts in Ladakh, the Union Government is likely to announce two new administrative units.

The Tribune reported that government may grant additional administrative units and enhance powers to Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils. While the demand for district status for Zanskar and Nubra is under consideration, full statehood is unlikely. Discussions on the Sixth Schedule and local employment are ongoing.

Meanwhile, amid the ongoing agitations a delegation of leaders from Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), Ladakh L-G Brig BD Mishra (retd), MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, and Hill Development Council’s chairpersons, are set to meet Union Minister Nityanand Rai on February 19.

The Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal has also discussed with senior leaders the negative impact the agitation can have on the Lok Sabha election for the sole seat in the UT. “The central government may soon announce two new districts – Zanskar and Nubra – in Ladakh which will fulfil the long-standing demand of the locals as both the areas are located very far from the present district headquarters,” sources told the newspaper.
